Where have I been? + July fandom roundup

I wanted to wait until Battleship revealed to post my roundup, since that was most of what I wrote in July. But first, a brief update on me!

Thanks to the wonderful help of some DW friends, I'm officially:tm: self-hosting websites now. Some of my projects at the moment include:

fuck yeah femslash, a femslash-themed fediverse instance (if you'd like an invite code, shoot me a message!)
fandom.cooking, a fandom-themed communal recipe book for documenting (public domain) fandom-themed cookbooks as well as uploading user-created recipes. if you'd like a username/pw combo to add some fandom recipes to our site, please message me! :D

Future projects include:

femslash-themed Old School Style forums
femslash wiki, a wiki allowing people to upload information about their favorite femslash ships (trying to figure out how i can appropriately moderate this one lol, so it's only tentative)

This is mostly what I've been doing. My self-hosting hyperfixation is so bad I've been....... losing sleep.......

I'm now on...

Chapter 7 in my book, I'm near the end of Chapter 7 actually. I've been writing all day, since like 9:45 this morning.

I'm also in the middle of reading a Native American horror story called White Horse and Twilight, the first book. From what I remember of the first serial of the book, it was actually crappy. I remember a lot of she sighed, he said, she said. I do the same thing now but I want to write like whoever Stephanie Myers' editor is. It's a really good book now.

Edward is a bit more controlling than usual, I'd call him a narcissit, but that's not Stephanie's intention. He's just a normal 'vampire' whose idea of caring is an overbearing mother figure, which is what Bella needed after Renee got married.

Also it's a lot slower paced than the movies, which I enjoy, them falling in love now makes sense. In the movies it's just like... okay, we see each other a couple times, you save me once and now we're in love. I will never stop making fun of the films, even though I have a soft spot in my heart for them but the books are way way way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. I promise.

I'll speak more on White Horse in a little bit but the chapters are short and engaging, it reads like a really long horror movie with a lot of scenes. It's easy to picture and imagine as well too. The author uses vivid imagery to get their point across.

Anyway, back to reading Twilight. I'm going to power read through this book in the next two days. Time to put on another pomodoro and read it again.

A fantastic opinion piece in The Guardian discussing pop culture. Every single line is a banger, but leaving some of my favorites below:
- This is an earnest but somehow deeply sad defibrillation of dead worlds, built around a hollow craving that can never ever be filled.

Fandom Update, August 2, 2025

Playing: Even more UmaMusu! I also have To a T on my to play-list, but it looks like it's not on Switch yet. Not opposed to playing it on my computer, but it seems like the sort of game I'd much rather play on the couch. Honestly, I'd love another puzzle kind of Switch game to play but nothing has caught my eye yet, and I want to finish Hundred Line before starting 13 Sentinels. Maybe I'll take another look at the store and see, I've heard Mika and the Witch's Mountain is fantastic.
Reading: Finished Zer0es - a 3/5 modern thriller with some genuinely terrifying imagery (the description of what the main villain is... was not expecting it to get that dark, bravo.) elevated to a 5/5 with the narration. Seriously, I would have dropped this book if I read it on my own as the prose is not super great, but the audiobook is phenomenal. ~~ray chase my beloved~~ I started listening to The Enchanted Greenhouse (Cozy romance/fantasy novel) by Sarah Beth Durst which has the same exact vibes as The Spellshop (precisely what I was looking for!). Also started reading Shielded (YA fantasy) by KayLynn Flanders which is a quick, fun novel - read the first quarter of the book in a sitting and will probably finish it within the week.
Watching: Saw The Matrix for the first time this week. Great movie, I can see how and why it had the influence it did on culture and future cyberpunk movies/aesthetics. More Dropout as well. A few episodes of Dr. Who as well, but nothing much in the TV space. Hoping to get some friends together to watch KPop Demon Hunters soon!
Listening: Outside of the audiobooks above, I'm not listening to a whole lot outside of music. Lots of metal and sadboy acoustic songs for maximum whiplash!
Writing: Got a few hundred more words down for IIBB - a little worried I'm going to have to cut back on scope to make the deadline. I mostly just want to get to The Scene at this point.
